Property tax assessment of all buildings is being preceded by a total survey by BMC officials in association with the officials of Census of India. To make the entire survey full proof, this tie up has been ensured. GIS maps are being utilised for the purpose of survey which will last 90 days. The survey work has already begun in a specially designed format; BMC aims at multiplying its property tax collection four times i.e from current Rs.10 Crores to Rs. 40 Crores per annum. As a mandatory reform under JNNURM, BMC is taking steps to adopt the unit area method so that citizens are able to make self assessment of their tax due. All the property tax records are undergoing computerisation efforts are on to ensure netting of all un-assessed properties in the city.
